Home of Al-Rayyan SC, 20 km west of Doha: a 40,000-seat bowl that reads as a tent pitched at the edge of the desert, built largely from the stadium that stood there before it.

Design
Pattern Design gave the ground a facade of naqsh motifs — patterns standing for family, the beauty of the desert, local flora and fauna, and Qatar’s history of trade — which doubles as part of the cooling strategy. The seats run red and black for Al-Rayyan SC. The sustainability story is in the construction: more than 90% of the 2003 stadium demolished on the site was recycled or reused in the new build, work that earned a FIFA sustainability award. After the World Cup the upper tier came down and close to half of the 40,000 seats were donated to football development projects abroad.
Events
Ahmad Bin Ali opened on 18 December 2020, Qatar’s National Day. It hosted four matches of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2021 and seven matches of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and has staged one-off fixtures including the 48th Turkish Super Cup.
