The band of bright sponsor screens running along the edge of a football, basketball or ice-hockey field looks like it must be fed by a room full of specialist hardware. In reality, the heavy lifting for content is done in software, and the video signal it produces is ordinary. That means a single Windows PC running a perimeter player can build the show, run it, and control it live — the panels' own processor takes care of the rest. Here is how to set it up end to end.
What you'll need
- A Windows 10 or 11 PC with a spare video output.
- The LED processor / sender the panels already use.
- An HDMI or SDI link from the PC to that processor.
- Your sponsor media — the clips and stills you want to run.
- LedPlayMeter installed on the PC.
Step 1 — Define your panel and module size
Start by telling the software the shape of your real perimeter. Enter the pixel dimensions of the ribbon so the on-screen canvas matches the physical surface exactly — whether that is a single very wide row or a strip that wraps onto a second line. Getting this right first means every clip you import afterwards lands at the correct size and nothing is stretched or cropped at pitch-side.
Step 2 — Install the software and open the control panel
Install LedPlayMeter on the PC and launch it. Everything runs locally: the control panel and the player both live at http://localhost:5216 in your browser. The control panel is where you manage media, playlists and scenes; the player is the full-screen output you will eventually send to the boards. No cloud account and no external server are involved.
Step 3 — Import and normalize your media
Bring in your sponsor clips and stills. As you import, the software fits each item to the panel size you defined in Step 1, so a 12-second logo animation and a static banner both fill the ribbon cleanly. Keep your source files tidy and at a sensible resolution — the player handles the fitting, but a clean master always looks better on a bright wall of LEDs.
Step 4 — Build a playlist and scenes
Arrange the media into a running order and set how long each item shows, then loop the sequence for the length of the match. Beyond the rotating loop, save named scenes for the moments you want on demand — a goal celebration, a substitution board, a half-time sponsor. During play you fire these instantly without stopping the loop, then drop back into rotation.
Step 5 — Connect the PC to the LED processor
Run an HDMI or SDI cable from the PC's video output to the LED processor. The processor captures the player's full-screen output exactly as it would any other video source, then maps that image across the physical panels. Because the player produces a standard signal, it does not need to know the brand of your wall — only the pixel size you set in Step 1. The chain is simple:
Software player → PC video output → LED processor → perimeter panels
Step 6 — Open the player full-screen
On the PC wired to the processor, open the player page and put it into full screen — press F11 in the browser so there are no menus or borders in the captured image. If you prefer to keep the control panel on a separate machine, run the player on the pitch-side PC and open it from there, or reach it over the network at http://SERVER-IP:5216/player. Confirm the processor is capturing a clean, full-bleed picture before you go any further.
Step 7 — Go live and control the match
With the player full-screen and captured, you drive everything from the control panel: play, pause, skip, adjust brightness, and push a live ticker message across the boards without stopping the show. Trigger your saved scenes on demand as the action unfolds. If you are running more than one perimeter surface — or a wrapped ribbon — every connected player screen stays in sync from that single control panel, so one operator controls the whole ribbon.
Step 8 — Back up your setup
Once the show is built, export a single-file backup of the whole setup — media references, playlists, scenes and settings. You can restore that file on any machine, so a spare laptop can take over in minutes if the primary PC fails, and next season's setup starts from where you left off rather than from scratch.
