If you have ever watched a football, basketball or ice-hockey match, you have seen the band of bright screens running along the edge of the pitch, cycling through sponsor logos and animations. Those screens are LED perimeter boards (also called ribbon boards or perimeter advertising displays). LED perimeter software is the program an operator uses to decide what appears on them, in what order, and exactly when.
What the software actually does
The hardware — the panels and the processor — knows how to light up pixels. It does not know which pixels, in what sequence, or for how long. That is the job of the software. A typical LED perimeter application handles:
- Media library. Import sponsor clips and stills, and normalize them to the exact pixel dimensions of your perimeter (for example a single long strip, or a strip that wraps onto a second line).
- Playlists and rotations. Arrange the media into a running order, set how long each item shows, and loop the whole sequence for the duration of a match.
- Scenes. Save named layouts — a goal celebration, a substitution board, a half-time sponsor — and trigger them instantly during live play.
- Playback control. Play, pause, skip, adjust brightness, and push a live message (ticker) across the boards without stopping the show.
- Reporting. Keep a log of what was shown and when, so a sponsor can be given proof-of-play for their contracted number of exposures.
How it connects to the LED panels
Between the software and the physical boards sits an LED processor (sometimes called a sending unit or video controller). The chain looks like this:
Software player → PC video output → LED processor → perimeter panels
A browser- or PC-based player produces a normal full-screen image. You run that player on the computer wired to the processor over HDMI or SDI, and the processor captures the image exactly as it would any other video source, then maps it across the panels. Because the output is a standard video signal, a well-built software player is hardware-independent — it does not need to know the brand of your panels, only the pixel size of the surface it is drawing.
Software player vs. hardware-provider apps
This is where a lot of the confusion sits, and it is the question buyers ask most: if the panels already came with software, why would I need anything else?
The app bundled with an LED system is usually written by the panel manufacturer to drive their hardware. It excels at the electrical side — calibration, pixel mapping, signal timing — and it often assumes a fixed installation. A dedicated perimeter software player is built around the other half of the problem: the day-to-day operation during an event. The two are not really competitors; they sit at different layers.

In practice many venues run both: the manufacturer tool configures the wall once, and a perimeter software player handles every event after that.
What to look for in LED perimeter software
- Seamless transitions. The next visual should be prepared in the background so swaps happen with no black frames.
- Any panel size. You define the module dimensions; the software adapts, whether the perimeter is one long row or wraps to a second line.
- Runs offline. Player and control panel should work on a local network — internet only for updates and support, never as a dependency during a match.
- Multiple synchronized screens. One control panel should mirror every command to all connected player screens at once.
- Backup and restore. A single-file backup you can move between machines protects a match-day setup.
Who uses it
Any event where LED boards surround the field of play: football and futsal, basketball, volleyball, handball, ice hockey, tennis, athletics, combat sports and motorsport. Stadiums, arenas, sports clubs and the AV companies that service them all rely on perimeter software to turn a wall of panels into a controllable, sellable advertising surface.
